Twin Sister (Comp 43 and 45) is that little band that can. Dreamscape instrumentals along with whispering singing in your ear just as you’re drifting off, you’ll be wondering where this band’s been hiding all your indie-listening life. The perfect blend of pop and psychedelic, not letting either direction define them. Rather, Twin Sister is redefining easy-listening with their cool guitar, warm keyboards, even warmer bass, dulled drumming and that sweet, playful singing. The band is coming soon to a town near you in the U.S. and for those overseas, you’ll have to visit them at their website and myspace until they branch out internationally. For local comps4jenna listeners in Chicago, Twin Sister will be opening tomorrow night at Lincoln Hall during Bear in Heaven‘s Pitchfork Festival aftershow.

I’ve decided to start a new segment here on comsp4jenna that will feature a specific artist of interest and offer up some individual tracks by that artist for download. The first featured artist in this installment, entitled tracks4jenna, is Prince of Tennis out of the Czech Republic. Prince of Tennis is breaking ground with a Hot Chip meets the 80′s with a hint of The Notwist sound but… more original-sounding than that description. Combining indie pop and electronic and keeping it lo-fi and low key, the ingenuitive but flowing song structures along with humbly-overlaid lyrics will keep your ears intrigued but also blissful. The group’s EP, Camping in North Ikea, was self-released this past Monday, June 14, and can be purchased on 12″ vinyl at their website.

Switch It Up a Bit

Magic Hours

In honor of Explosions in the Sky playing Magic Hours live for the first time in six years two nights ago in Chicago. I’m revisiting a short film that I took a liking to a while back. Jenna’s cousin, Dennis Aspiras, is the maker of the film and a slightly-altered Magic Hours serves as the soundtrack. The past two nights’ performances by EITS, in Chicago and Grand Rapids, have been incredibly magical hours for me, to say the least. They’re music was recently described as a “universal language” by local avid gig photographer, Kirstie, whom provided the shot of Michael James, above. Universal. That is what makes Explosion in the Sky’s music so everlasting. Below is “Social Experiment 9″ which may have been titled such for a school project but the name is somewhat fitting to the plot of the film. And below the video is a live audio recording of Magic Hours performed a little over six years ago in Dennis’s hometown of Toronto. Enjoy!

Bonobo Song on LOST

I love LOST and Sayid is one of my favorite characters, mainly because he reminds me of Munaf of Explosions in the Sky. I also very much like the electronic artist, Bonobo. LOST has used a lot of retro music on the show, but two episodes ago, they pulled out a Bonobo jam during Sayid’s morning-after scene in bed with another love interest of his. For such a badass, Sayid can be quite a sap sometimes. This track is the perfect “Let’s stay in bed all day” proposition music and it’s got an outro that you’ll be sad to hear fade away.
