UPDATE 9/29/2011: My playlists on CHIRP Radio will now be documented like so.

A lot of you have said to me, “Richard Paul, I need more music from comps4jenna more regularly.” To which I replied, “Alright, I’ll become a DJ for the new local independent radio station, CHIRP.” Then a lot of you said to me, “Richard Paul, how can I hear your radio show at a more convenient time?” And when I say “a lot of you” I mean none of you, actually. But, it is part of my job description to know what you’re all thinking.

Unfortunately, it would be illegal for me to post my shows online, but hopefully one day CHIRP will begin archiving shows. For now though, I will be posting my radio show playlist on comps4jenna the day that it happens and for every track that the artist or record label (or other reputable source) has posted on soundcloud/bandcamp possible, the stream will be provided next to the track on tumblr.

This first announcement fittingly coincides with my second announcement. I will be moving to the even less convenient Sundays 6am to 9am slot starting this weekend. To anyone booing right now, I sincerely apologize. CHIRP asked if any DJs would want to move to this slot and it just so happens that the move would more nicely mesh with my personal schedule (read: I like to get crunk on Friday nights).

Through the what seemed like bombardment of incredible good music yesterday (or maybe it was just the fact that I was listening to it in this great weather we’re having) one album announcement stood out above everything else. The Drift will be releasing their new album, Blue Hours, on October 4 via Temporary Residence, Ltd. and it sounds like this is gonna be a whopper. This album embodies the grieving process after the loss of the band’s trumpet player, Jeff Jacobs. From what I’ve heard so far, there seems to be a bit of anger but also a bit of light-heartedness, maybe honoring what Jeff would wish upon all of us. All-in-all though, it sounds like this could be heart-wrenching. The now trio have transformed their sound on this album to be slightly more loopy, and no doubt, meditative. The absence of Jeff’s trumpet is like an instrument in itself.

Friend of the band and film maker, Paul Clipson, created a music video for the album’s opening track, “Dark Passage.” Here’s that along with the mp3 of another track from Blue Hours entitled “Horizon” courtesy of TRL, where you can preorder the album now.

For the longest time, I have not been able to find an artist that I invest in even half as much as I do in Explosions in the Sky. I have never so deeply and consistently cared about release after release from an artist than I have about EITS’s albums (and I’m sure I’m not the only case). So after much reflection, here is my personal review of their latest album released about a month ago, Take Care, Take Care, Take Care.

To properly judge the seventh release to come from Explosions in the Sky, Take Care, Take Care, Take Care, I must look at its relation to the rest of the band’s releases. In their infancy, How Strange, Innocence was released in 2000 and it was apparent that a star was born; something truly brilliant and bright. It was of course a little raw- and amateur-sounding, but… well, to say that the potential was there would be a massive understatement. Riding this new and exciting phenomenon that was Explosions in the Sky’s sound, the band released Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Die, Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Live Forever in 2001. The argument could be made that the peak or epitome – but I wouldn’t say masterpiece – of their existence was 2003′s The Earth is Not a Cold Dead Place. This is surely when EITS was crowned king of whatever you want to call the hill. This peak carried over a bit into the Friday Night Lights Soundtrack but what didn’t make the public eye (or ears) was that during their studio time writing for FNL, the band played around with various instruments and even wrote a lot of material that was shied away from in favor of their previous album releases when it came time to selecting the “right” pieces for the scenes. The band’s experimentation did not stop there as they soon released The Rescue EP which brought with it the introduction of piano, vocals, sampling and even spoons. It was again raw- and a little amateur-sounding and still in its infancy, but exploration is certainly a good thing. The first full-length product of their experimentation was 2007′s All of a Sudden, I Miss Everyone. While it is a solid album, I couldn’t help but feel that this was a premature exposure at a vulnerable time, a time at which experimenting was still in progress.

In Take Care, Take Care, Take Care, the band shows a newfound maturity and wisdom. Repeat listens are a must for this album. Take Care does not have all the hooks of exciting and new as their past albums do. Climaxes are more modest and given less emphasis. Take Care dabbles in innovative sounds involving strings, more sampling and other electronics but remains true to the band’s roots in guitars and a drumset. Take Care‘s tracks tie techniques of old and of late together: The guitar sounds and effects that EITS has perfected, the incorporation of piano and vocals, and the purity of their beginnings. The repetition in the album name blurs together and forms two of the primary feelings invoked by the album. The first, “Take Care,” the always sorrowful (no matter how big or small) feeling of a goodbye. The second, “Care Take,” the warming, comforting feeling of being cared for.

The opening track of Take Care, “Last Known Surroundings,” is the only one that I’m unsure about. It is sounding almost too pretty and and is half invoking in me the All of a Sudden feelings mentioned above but also half proclaiming “We have grown.” “Human Qualities” explores all that makes us human from our eyes to our toes back to our mouth as the vocals and a heartbeat are all we hear amidst the silence in the middle of the song. Then with the most masterful grace I’ve ever heard from EITS, the instruments return from the silence and build up to the eureka! discovery of just how magnificent the human being is. In “Trembling Hands,” EITS does two things they have never done before: Create a 3-1/2 minute song and create a song that is one continuous rock-out throughout the entire song; no crescendos or decrescendos. In “Be Comfortable, Creature,” we are slowly eased into a warm comfort zone and then in the final quarter of the song, we’re pulled out of our body to look around us and realize the refuge that we’ve been so kindly provided. “Postcard from 1952″ has a vintage quality to it (as my wife – I think aptly – points out) and utilizes vintage EITS sound as well. Lastly, if you like tragic endings, you’ll love the album closer, “Let Me Back In.” The climax (both heartfelt and painful) occurs in the middle of the song; it is rather short-lived and restrained; whereas in the past albums, this pivotal emotional point of the song might be longer and more epic. It might also be much more “finale,” but instead we have a nearly four-minute-long fadeout after the climax where we are left to be alone with only our thoughts. Or… is Explosions in the Sky there with us too? As they often are.

Destroyer has been around since Vancouver-native, Dan Bejar (singer/songwriter) formed the band in 1995. Members have come and gone since then but Dan has always remained. The band’s latest LP, Kaputt, will be releasing January 25 on the Merge record label. On Kaputt, Dan’s voice, though slightly on the nerdy side, exudes the confidence of a middle-aged gentleman in a velvet robe with cognac in hand. His vocals are complimented by the sweet and smooth singing of a female’s; the middle-aged gentleman’s mistress, no doubt. The entire album has a sultry, sexy, jazzy swagger that lures you in and pours you a drink. Every song has character to it; not a one is flat or filler. Horns, saxophone and flute are sprinkled throughout; but not in the foreground, they are in the background – mood lighting. Dan’s lyrics are mysterious and poetic as ever and I especially like the recurring mention of his “song for America.” A few Destroyer tracks are available below and you can stream Kaputt in it’s entirety here.

I do not think that it’s possible to properly do Austrailia’s own Nick Bertke (aka Pogo) enough justice in a single post. The man, the legend, is most known for taking snippets of audio (and often the video that goes with it) from pre-existing audio/video recordings and piecing them together to form an entirely new work of art. He’s sampled from several popular films, most of which belonging to Disney and Pixar, and created this new electronic music as well as the spliced music videos. On YouTube, he has received upwards of 5 million views for one piece of work alone, notably the song Alice. Upon request he has done work professionally for Disney/Pixar and he’s also had the job of creating a new piece of music from the popular “Walking on a Dream” by Empire of the Sun for a Honda commercial. Nick has become well versed in copyright laws and has had his share of legal battles which he handled with much grace. Pogo’s even been the inspiration for a few derivative works and fan-made tributes. Before he got into this form of music, Nick was an accomplished musician not only electronically, but also classically as heard in a piano piece he wrote for those hard times we all must go through entitled “Joob.” And the guy could have just as easily gone into 3D visual effects and/or graphic design as is clearly evident on his personal blog/website. Pogo’s latest and current endeavour is Remixing the World, for which he travels the globe recording sights and sounds that he then uses to compose a track and video reflecting the cultures that he encounters. The project is funded by the money he earns for each track that he produces. The song that launched Nick’s recording and mixing of live-action sound and footage was Gardyn, a Mother’s Day gift to his mom – featuring his mom – and is embedded below.

You can easily spend hours viewing and listening to all of Pogo’s work on his website and youtube channel. And Nick does not stop working! So return visits to check up on him are an absolute must. I would not be surprised if this isn’t the last tracks4jenna to feature Pogo.

Two days ago, after a long hard fought battle with cancer, Jeff Jacobs (trumpet, flugelhorn, electronics) of The Drift passed away. He spent the majority of his final days with friends and family in his home state of Michigan. His fight was aided by a benefit concert and cancer fund in his name which just goes to show you that he will be missed dearly by many. To me, personally, The Drift has been one of the greatest gifts to us all and Jeff’s music will live on long, long after his departure from this life. Very sad he is gone but forever grateful for the music he left behind.

I have been an on-and-off appreciator of Portland’s Grails for some time now and it really is a shame that I am ever off on my listening of them, because I nearly missed out on one of the best releases in 2010. That release is Grails’ EP, Black Tar Prophecies Vol 4 on Important Records. All 5 songs on this EP are major hits in their own right. It’s very nice to see this band continuing to explore new sounds in the extremely competitive instrumental post-rock category (if we must categorize). Impeccable drumming, the incorporation of sitar and piano, it’s all gold. Chalk up their forthcoming LP on Temporary Residence Ltd. to one of my most anticipated albums of 2011.

If you haven’t already heard through the comps4jenna mailing list or various social networks then I am here to tell you that I have recently been enlisted by the Chicago Independent Radio Project (CHIRP) to serve as a DJ sub. Possibly down the road I will get a regular shift, but as of right now I only go on the air when I am needed and available. With this newly obtained privilege I plan to share with all of you my musical findings of recent and my favorites of old. You’ll be hearing all of those songs that I sift through as I’m in the process of sifting through them for Comp production. My hopes are that some of you fall in love with those songs that unfortunately end up just short of making it into the Comp limelight. You’ll be hearing tracks from the mysterious Comps 1-4 and even older. This will also be your chance to hear what I actually sound like and get to know me a little better as I am forced to interact with you during my broadcast and can’t refrain – as I’ve done on this blog (for the most part) – from personal meanderings. However, it will be and always has been about the music. I’m very excited to have another outlet for sharing wonderful songs with others and I hope all of you find it as enjoyable as I’m going to.

An up-to-date list of my upcoming DJ shifts will be keptMore information is provided on the CHIRP widget in the sidebar of this blog. You can also use the aforementioned mailing list and social networks to receive notification alerts of these shiftsjust before I go on the air. Explosions in the Sky are currently at work on a new album slated to release sometime in 2011. At various events this year, the band has performed two songs written for said album. Both tracks are yet to be named and can be heard on Comps 50 and 51. A recording of the very same song on Comp 51 was obtained by OPB at the ATP Festival in New York. The quality is impeccable and the entire set can be heard here. The photograph above was taken by JT as her and I had the privilege of witnessing the event in person.

Twin Sister (Comp 43 and 45) is that little band that can. Dreamscape instrumentals along with whispering singing in your ear just as you’re drifting off, you’ll be wondering where this band’s been hiding all your indie-listening life. The perfect blend of pop and psychedelic, not letting either direction define them. Rather, Twin Sister is redefining easy-listening with their cool guitar, warm keyboards, even warmer bass, dulled drumming and that sweet, playful singing. I’ve decided to start a new segment here on comsp4jenna that will feature a specific artist of interest and offer up some individual tracks by that artist for download. The first featured artist in this installment, entitled tracks4jenna, is Prince of Tennis out of the Czech Republic. Prince of Tennis is breaking ground with a Hot Chip meets the 80′s with a hint of The Notwist sound but… more original-sounding than that description. Combining indie pop and electronic and keeping it lo-fi and low key, the ingenuitive but flowing song structures along with humbly-overlaid lyrics will keep your ears intrigued but also blissful. The group’s EP, Camping in North Ikea, was self-released this past Monday, June 14, and can be purchased on 12″ vinyl at their website.

First I should apologize for the comp void for the past month. Rest assured, I am earnestly working on Comp 27. Hopefully it will emerge sooner rather than later.

Now, something to get you by. Something that’s definitely gotten me by. A man named Alex Moulton and his album called Exodus. Above is the very epic artwork. This is only a glimpse into the genius that is behind the artwork. Here is an insight into the album and the man himself (taken from Alex Moulton’s myspace):

We’re constantly being told we live in a hyper-accelerated, hyper-real age, where sound bites and short attention spans are the functional tools of survival. With entire record collections available online as boiled-down bit torrents—with virtually every song ever recorded, in fact, floating around in MP3 cyberspace just waiting to be grabbed—who the hell has any time to slow down and listen to a full-length concept album? Deeper still, who can find the time to make one?

Somehow, Alex Moulton did, even though he arguably logs more travel, face time and 12-hour work days than most high-profile foreign diplomats. As musician, producer, DJ, music video director and CEO of the Expansion Team media production company and record label, Moulton has squeezed several lifetimes of creative output into just the last ten years, and lately he shows no signs of easing off the gas. With the release of his sprawling solo debut Exodus, he conjures a retro-utopian vision of a happier time, when albums were real albums and music was presented not just as disembodied chunks of digital information, but as a full-on experience.

“Although I understand the reasons why, it makes me sad that the album format is breathing its last breath,” Moulton explains. “So just as the final nail is being driven into the coffin, I wanted to honor the tradition of the great epic concept albums of the late ’70s. It’s possible I may be among the last generation that spent hours listening to LPs, staring at gatefold covers and imagining the world that the music painted in my head, and that’s the experience I wanted to recreate with Exodus. I believe those moments turn someone into a real music lover—it doesn’t come from listening to singles.”

That might sound almost hopelessly nostalgic, but Exodus is much more than just a walk down memory lane. Although seasoned crate diggers will detect vintage ’70s influences as far-flung as Tangerine Dream, Giorgio Moroder, Vangelis, Jean Michel Jarre and even Lipps Inc., Exodus moves beyond mere synth-pop prog-rock worship to embody a larger vision—one where the music becomes an all-enveloping narrative, inviting the listener into a gear-shifting, headphone-friendly mindtrip.

“I was trained as a filmmaker,” Moulton says, “so I always write music with a visual in mind. In this case I actually created a full-realized storyline—an epic sci-fi adventure, or a space-opera, if you will—that builds in a climactic arc with all the plot twists and turns. The songs are presented continuously like a DJ set, but they’re also like key scenes for a film. And even though I know what the characters are doing at every moment of each song, I’m hoping listeners will create their own story.”

For his part, Moulton serves as both conductor and funky time traveler, hurtling toward deep outta space (as the late great Billy Preston so elegantly put it) on a musical journey that’s by turns irreverent, groovacious and, at times, exuberantly cheesy. “I think electronic music often takes itself way too seriously,” he laments. “Everyone wants to be the coolest new DJ or whatever, but the electronic acts I love most aren’t afraid to let it all hang out, from Chromeo to Lemon Jelly to Daft Punk. Isn’t that what funky music is all about?”

“All my inspirations get channeled through what feels right for the dancefloor today,” Moulton says, citing the mixing acumen of two-time Grammy-winning engineer Marc Urselli and the mastering stroke of Nilesh Patel (of Daft Punk and Chemical Brothers fame), “so there are some very modern elements to the music, and it’s mixed and mastered the way a record needs to be now. But again, it’s a total concept album. I wanted to make something like a Pink Floyd record, where you put it on and you listen to the whole thing all the way through and it takes you on this crazy journey. It’s progressive, it’s funky and it probably has no place in a singles-driven market, but I’m doing it because when I was a kid this is what I had imagined music would sound like at the dawn of the 21st Century.”

Needless to say, I strongly recommend this album. But be warned, you won’t be able to stop listening to it.
